Human rights panel receives 10,000 petitions

    ABIDJAN

    The chairman of the National Human Rights Violations Investigation Panel of Nigeria, Justice Chukwudifo Oputa, said the panel has received 10,000 petitions from Nigerians on various forms of human rights abuses nationwide, the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) reported on Friday.

    Oputa said that only 120 of the petitions were serious cases for the commission to hear during public sittings scheduled for 23 October in Abuja, according to NTA TV. They include complaints of torture, assassination, judicial murder and detention, Oputa said. He added that public sittings would also be held in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano and Benin.
