Four dead, 39 ill in meningitis outbreak

    JOHANNESBURG

    An emergency immunization program against meningitis has been launched in northwestern Namibia after four people died and 39 others contracted the disease, news reports said. Health authorities said many of the patients had come across the nearby Angolan border, seeking health care in Namibian hospitals. Health facilities in the neighbouring region of Angola, apart from one Roman Catholic mission hospital, are virtually non-existent after 25 years of civil war and mismanagement.
