Botswana health officials this week said malaria had killed 19 people in the country since the beginning of the year.
The officials told PANA, however, that they expected the death toll from the disease to be lower that the 56 recorded last year. The officials added that thus far, 45,997 cases of suspected malaria had been recorded and that out of these, 5,201 had been confirmed to be suffering from the disease.
The officials said of the recorded deaths, 13 occurred in the extreme northern part of the country, which is the most malaria-prone. These are Chobe, Okavango, Ngamiland, Boteti and Tutume areas. Botswana, which concluded an anti-malaria campaign at the weekend, has adopted a three-pronged approach which involves the usage of prophylaxis, vector control and health education.
