Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo has instructed his interior minister to investigate reports that security forces raped and tortured people detained at the Police Training School in Abidjan in connection with demonstrations on 4-5 December by the opposition Rassemblement des Republicains (RDR). An official communique published on Friday in local dailies stated that Gbagbo had been informed by several persons of the abuses reportedly committed at the police school. “He was moved in particular by the fact that, according to the information, certain women or girls were reportedly raped by security forces,” the communique stated. The communique added that Gbagbo immediately ordered Interior Minister Emile Boga Doudou to launch an investigation and report back to him within 10 days.
