Tajikistan will be making a formal appeal for international aid after “catastrophic” floods and mudslides in the south killed over 20 and left hundreds homeless, according to Tajik President Imomali Rakhmon.

“More than 2,000 homes, a lot of social infrastructure buildings, 30 bridges, 10km of roads, power lines and communications systems were destroyed; 22 people died and more than 50 are missing; 200 others were injured”, Rakhmon said at an emergency meeting on 10 May in Dushanbe.

He instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare an appeal and communicate it to donor countries and humanitarian organizations.

Rakhmon said the estimated damage was US$204 million and rising.
