Set up in 1985, the programme covers communities in Karachi with a combined population of 85,000.
Under the programme students, nurses and doctors provide basic health care services and “engage with communities for research and service projects that cover issues ranging from illiteracy and environmental degradation to domestic violence and women's issues,” according to AKU.
The prize was awarded by the Tallories Network and the MacJannet Foundation (both connected to Tufts University, USA).
