Yusuf travels to Ethiopia

    Puntland leader Abdullahi Yusuf left Nairobi for Ethiopia on Friday morning, with sources in Nairobi telling IRIN he was to have talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi before travelling on to Libya. Yusuf chartered a special plane for the trip to Nairobi and was accompanied by some of his cabinet, the Mogadishu newspaper 'Xog-Ogaal' reported on Thursday. The Puntland leader enjoys a "very close" relationship with the Ethiopian government but Ethiopia has so far failed to convince the leader to attend the Djibouti-hosted Somali National Peace Conference, Somali sources in Nairobi told IRIN. The Somali media has speculated on the reasons for the "secret" mission, linking it to the peace talks in Djibouti. Abdullahi Yusuf "enjoys very close ties of mutual respect with the Ethiopian government and it is unlikely that he would object to anything that the Ethiopians may advise him", 'Xog-Ogaal' said Thursday.
