Army chief calls for international pressure on Kabila

    ABIDJAN

    The Rwandan army chief of staff, Brigadier-General Kayumba Nyamwasa, on Tuesday urged the United Nations and regional leaders to put pressure on DRC President Laurent Kabila to implement the Lusaka peace accord, threatened by renewed fighting. “It is up to the international community to pressure Kabila,” he said at a welcoming ceremony in Kigali for 1,000 Rwandan soldiers who returned from the DRC city of Kisangani. Regional analysts told IRIN that renewed fighting in the DRC might compel Uganda and Rwanda to slow down the withdrawal of their troops from DRC.
