A grenade attack at a social gathering in Bukavu at the weekend killed seven people and injured 43 others, 13 of them “seriously”. Rebel-controlled radio from Bukavu said the wounded were admitted to the Bukavu general hospital. It quoted administrative authorities in the area as saying on Sunday that they were “on the trail of the criminals who are infiltrated by and serving DRC President Laurent-Desire Kabila”. They said an inquiry had been launched. The radio noted that this was the first time such an incident took place in Sud (South) Kivu since August 1998.
Meanwhile, US ambassador-at-large on war crimes David Scheffer and John Prendergast, advisor to Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Susan Rice, are this week on a visit of eastern DRC to look at specific issues related to human rights in the region.
The two officials, who arrived on a week-long mission on 23 August, were visiting the towns of Goma, Bukavu, Butembo and Kisangani.
