US help against AIDS, polio and malaria

    NAIROBI

    US President Bill Clinton on Sunday announced more than US $20 million to support efforts to combat AIDS, polio and malaria in Nigeria. Clinton and President Olusegun Obasanjo praised the efforts of Nigerian non-governmental organizations to help stem the spread of HIV and assist people living with the virus and their families. At least US $9.4 million is for HIV/AIDS prevention and care and US $8.7 million for polio eradication. The remainder of the funding is for producing insecticide-treated bednets to prevent malaria and initiate a workplace-based HIV/AIDS education and prevention programme.
