Returning to nationhood

President Isayas Afewerki of Eritrea has welcomed the election of President Abdulqassim Salad Hassan saying the establishment of a new interim administration had now to ensure the participation of all Somalis so as to find a lasting solution to the decade of civil war and anarchy which has ravaged the country. The Eritrean leader, who attended Hassan’s inauguration in Arta, Djibouti, on Sunday, said in a statement carried by the Eritrean news agency that “the main aim of the transitional government in Somalia is to normalise Somalia as a nation”. He said the Somali people had stood by the Eritrean people during their protracted struggle [for independence], adding that no Eritrean was untouched by the crisis in Somalia. He noted that the strategic adversity in the Horn of Africa caused by the crisis in Somalia could not be taken lightly. Eritrea, he added, would do everything it could to bring about peace and stability in Somalia.
