Truth Commission still needed

Human rights groups in Sierra Leone continue to pursue the creation of a truth and reconciliation commission, despite the changed political climate since fighting resumed in May and the UN’s creation of a special court to judge perpetrators of gross human rights abuses, UNAMSIL said.

A national workshop has been tentatively scheduled for October to discuss the role the commission would play in the present political climate. At a forum they organised on 10 July, the NGOs called on the international community and Sierra Leoneans to revive the pre-preparatory stage of the establishment of the commission.
