The 'Vanguard' daily in Nigeria reported that about 5,000 youths marched on Wednesday in Yenagoa, capital of the southeastern state of Bayelsa, to press their demand that states fully control their resources. The youths marched to the Bayelsa House of Assembly where they presented a draft bill on resource control by states to the speaker of the assembly, the 'Vanguard' reported. Bayelsa is part of the oil-rich Niger Delta.
The youths rejected a provision for states to receive 13 percent of the revenue generated from their natural resources. That provision is contained in a Niger Delta Development Bill drawn up by the federal government and passed this year by parliament.
