The Rwandan army chief-of-staff, Brigadier-General Kayumba Nyamwasa, has denied claims by the Kinshasa government that 93 Rwandan soldiers were last week killed by pro-government militias in Walikale in eastern DRC. “Even if there had been fighting between the two armies, it would have been impossible for the Rwandan army to lose such a number to the Mayi-Mayi,” the Rwandan chief-of-staff told a news conference over the weekend.
The office of the president in Kinshasa last week announced that pro-government militias had killed 93 Rwandan troops and six unidentified white mercenaries in the east. The Mayi-Mayi group under the command of General Joseph Padiri claimed having mounted the attack on the Rwandan troops. Independent sources had also expressed scepticism over the claims.
