South Africa will go to polls on 14 April, President Thabo Mbeki announced in parliament on Monday.
Mbeki said the voters' lists would be closed at midnight on Wednesday, February 11. The last registration weekend brought the total of voters to just over 20 million.
The election will be South Africa's third since the country became a democracy in 1994.
Up to seven million eligible voters are believed to have remained unregistered.
