Sources on the ground have warned of escalating violence around the northeastern DRC town of Butembo. The village of Maboya, 25 km from Butembo, has been “emptied of its citizens” due to constant fighting between Mayi-Mayi militia and soldiers of the Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD-ML), IRIN learnt. Most of the population is languishing in the surrounding bush in dire conditions, and there have been civilian casualties, the sources stressed. Others have managed to flee to Butembo and nearby villages.
