Government announces precautionary measures against SARS

    BRAZZAVILLE

    The ministry of health said on Tuesday that it planned to place a doctor in all airports and ports as a precautionary measure against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), the deadly flu-like virus which has killed more than 100 people worldwide.

    A statement from the ministry called upon port and airport authorities to be vigilant in view of the way the virus can spread. It said a doctor would be present wherever people entered the country, and that anyone showing signs of SARS would be isolated.

    Alain Moka, the Congolese minister of health, said that sensitisation of travellers and companies, and the isolation of suspected cases, constituted the best way to prevent SARS.

    News agencies reported that doctors in South Africa are investigating what they say is a probable case of SARS. If confirmed by the World Health Organisation, it would be the first case of SARS on the continent.
