Japan signed an agreement on Friday to grant the local equivalent of US $2.9 million in debt relief to Tanzania.
Officials at the Japanese Embassy in Dar es Salaam said that half of the money would be used for budgetary support, while the other half would be used for imports.
"We have been providing debt relief for a while, but we are looking to cancel all Tanzania's official development assistance (ODA) debts from April, which is the beginning of the next financial year," Joram Rugemalila, an official from the embassy's Economic Corporation Department, told IRIN.
Rugemalila said Tanzania was the largest recipient of Japanese development aid in terms of grants and that Tokyo had been involved in various sectors in Tanzania, namely, road construction, health, water agriculture and electricity.
