Free anti-AIDS treatment kicks off

    JOHANNESBURG

    People living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana are receiving treatment from a free antiretoviral programme launched early in January.

    Sekyi Amoah, director-general of the Ghana AIDS Commission, told Reuters that the drugs were being disbursed through four hospitals around the country.

    Amoah said: "Our target is to have 6,000 people on the drugs each year over the next two years."

    The free treatment is partially subsidised through a US $15 million Global AIDS Fund grant which will also cover refurbishment of hospitals and laboratory facilities, in addition to counselling and testing for the next two years.
