AIDS programme targets immigrants and homosexuals

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Netherlands Ministry of Health has said its education programmes on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) would target immigrants and men who have sex with men.

    This follows a report by the country's National Institute of Public Health and Environment that 25 percent of newly reported HIV cases were among female immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa.

    The Minister of Health, Hans Hoogervorst, said this was due to an "explosive" increase in sexually transmitted diseases that included HIV.

    Hoogervorst said the increase in new STI cases among men who have sex with men was "especially troubling" because prior STI infection heightened the risk of such individuals contracting HIV.
