US pledges food aid

    ADDIS ABABA
    The US has pledged 100,000 mt of wheat to drought-stricken Ethiopia – the largest donation yet since an emergency appeal was launched recently. The US embassy in Addis Ababa said that during 2002 alone it had provided some 270,000 mt of food to Ethiopia, valued at US $110. It has also provided US $1.3 million for nutritional feeding in northeastern Afar region – one of the areas worst hit by the current drought. The US announcement has been welcomed by international non-governmental organisations which called on donors to do more to help alleviate the food crisis. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that Ethiopia is facing a massive food shortfall of more than 200,000 mt.
