HIV/AIDS costing mining industry

The high percentage of miners living with HIV/AIDS has impacted on South Africa's gold mining industry, local newspaper The Sowetan reported on Tuesday.

According to the Chamber of Mines, the industry is losing huge sums of revenue through lost productivity when workers fail to report for duty, and the death of skilled workers.

"Companies are noticing increased AIDS-related deaths. Productivity has been hit as people take more sick leave days or attend funerals," Chamber of Mines health adviser, Dr Fazel Randera, said.

The Chamber of Mines estimates that 82,000 or about 20 percent of South Africa's gold miners are living with HIV/AIDS.
