South Africa to provide cheaper HIV/AIDS drugs

South Africa's Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recently announced it was set to begin the local manufacture of generic HIV/AIDS drugs.

"The project will be launched in South Africa in mid-May and later extended to several African countries with high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria," DTI chemical engineer, Andre Kudlinsky, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, local AIDS activists said despite the initiative being an important step, they prefered to wait for "something more concrete".

"It sounds promising. I hope this is just not spin and there is something concrete," Treatment Action Campaign spokesman, Nathan Geffen, told the UN news service PlusNews.
