Full aid to resume in January

Resumption of full economic aid and financial cooperation between the European Union (EU) and Cote d'Ivoire, is likely to occur at the end of January 2002, Radio-Television ivoirienne (RTI) reported a visiting EU delegation, as saying on Friday. The announcement was made at the end of a meeting held in the economic capital Abidjan between the delegation and Ivorian Prime Minister Pascal Affi N'guessan, RTI reported.

The EU's decision was a result of "significant evolutions" in the country's socio-political situation, the television quoted the delegation as saying. It said the EU delegates announced that the organisation gave a positive assessment of the country at the end of consultations with the Ivorian government. Consultations had been concluded but aid, whicH partially resumed in late June, would remain partial till January.

The aid "is not yet full and total", the delegates were quoted as saying.

European economic cooperation was suspended following the December 1999 coup d'etat because the move by the military violated Article 96 of the EU-Africa, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP) treaty.
