Residents of Kiremba and Gasorwe, who fled recent rebel attacks on their northeastern communes, have left their havens at two primary schools in Muyinga for home, humanitarian workers told IRIN on Wedenesday.
OCHA reported that in Muyinga the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, which coordinates humanitarian response, said that 5,293 internally displaced people (IDPs) had been counted in the Mukoni primary school and 679 in Gasenyi primary school. All IDPs at the Gasenyi primary school returned home on Tuesday. "A small number of people are reported to have remained in Mukoni," OCHA reported.
Humanitarian workers distributed 5 kg of flower and 2.5 kg of pulses to each of the 1,129 displaced households in Mukoni. In all, they were given 5,645 kg of flour and 2,822 pulses. The 333 households in Gasenyi received a total of 1,665 kg of flour and 832 kg of pulses. The food came from the NGO German Agro Action.
"WFP has offered to make its food stocks in Muyinga available to the displaced," OCHA reported.
