Yellow fever update

    ABIDJAN

    Twenty-one people have died of yellow fever in Cote d'Ivoire out of a total of 203 suspected cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Wednesday. Seven of the deaths occurred in the economic capital, Abidjan, which had 55 suspected cases, WHO reported the Ministry of Health as saying. Cases have been registered in 19 other districts.

    WHO and its partners launched a mass vaccination campaign in Abidjan on 21 September in response to the first epidemic of urban yellow fever in Africa in 10 years. The 10-day campaign, which ended just over a week ago, immunised 2,610,994 people, WHO reported. WHO is providing support to the National Institute for Public Health to strengthen disease surveillance activities during the post-epidemic period, it added.
