Elections to be held by February

    ABIDJAN

    Sao Tome's foreign minister, Patrice Trovoada, said on Monday that early legislative elections were likely to be held by February 2002, news organisations reported. "We must mobilise resources so that elections take place by February," AFP quoted him as saying. The announcement came five days after Prime Minister Evaristo de Carvalho formed a new government which excludes members of the parliamentary majority. The government had been widely expected to announce early elections following the appointment of de Carvalho's 10-member cabinet, made up of members of the two parties that supported head of state Fradique de Menezes at presidential elections in July.
