Human rights body gets financial boost

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Zambia has received donations from four Scandinavian governments for the improvement of its operations and protection of human rights in the country, 'The Post' said on Tuesday.

    A statement from HRC chairperson judge Lombe Chibesakunda was quoted as saying that an agreement of US $48,500 was signed by the commission and the Finnish embassy last Friday while another worth US $110,000 per annum was signed between HRC and the Norwegian embassy for three years last Thursday.

    Judge Chibesakunda was quoted as saying the donation from the Finnish government would be used for the computerisation of the complaints' registry while part of the money would go towards staff training and other logistics. Chibesakunda said the money from the Norwegian government would enable the HRC to embark on their decentralisation programme which would start with the opening of two provincial offices on the Copperbelt and Western provinces this year.
