Leprosy treatment programme launched in Gambela

    NAIROBI

    The Gambela Regional State in western Ethiopia has launched a new leprosy treatment programme, the pro-government Walta Information Centre reported on 17 September. According to Walta, the Gambela health bureau said a total of 43 health institutions were ready to provide services to leprosy patients. Alemu Tilahun, an expert in the treatment of tuberculosis and leprosy, was quoted by Walta as saying that health clinics would also be involved in the service, as opposed to previous practices, which confined the treatment of leprosy to hospitals and health posts only. Alemu said one hospital, 12 health posts, and 30 clinics would take part in the programme, giving leprosy patients better access to medical services. Some 50 health professionals were trained for the programme, and essential drugs distributed to all selected health institutions, Alemu told Walta.
