Several reported dead from brew

    ABIDJAN

    Several people have been reported dead and scores more hospitalised after drinking a local broth made out of millet, news organisations and Health Ministry sources reported on Monday.

    The BBC, quoting Ivorian police sources, reported that at least 25 people had died in the village of Labokro, just south of the capital, Yamoussoukro. AFP, citing state-owned television said 83 had been admitted to hospital in Yamoussoukro. Ivorian Health Ministry officials, well informed of the situation, would not immediately disclose the number of dead and hospitalised. Officials told IRIN that a clearer picture of the situation may be available on Wednesday.

    BBC reported that the woman who had been selling the broth had been taken into custody. It was not clear whether or not she had been charged or was being held for her own protection.
