Returning refugees malnourished

    ABIDJAN

    A critical humanitarian situation is looming as more Sierra Leonean refugees return to the eastern town of Daru after fleeing recent fighting in Guinea, according to WFP’s emergency report of 20 July.

    “Most of them are reportedly malnourished, after being trapped for a long time between Guinea and RUF-controlled areas in Sierra Leone,” WFP said.

    UNHCR reported 3,000 arrivals last week, bringing their total to 25,000 as at 18 July.

    WFP responded with at least 3 mt of ‘Human Daily Rations’ in addition to a one-week food ration. The returnees were being relocated from Daru to Kenema and Barri Chiefdom in the south, WFP reported.
