UN mission hopes to rent base in CAR

    NAIROBI

    The UN mission in the DRC (MONUC) is seeking to rent a disused French military base in neighbouring Central African Republic (CAR), diplomatic sources confirmed to IRIN on Friday. Earlier this week, Ambassador Kamel Morjane, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s special representative to the DRC, visited the CAR capital Bangui where he held meetings with President Ange-Felix Patasse and Prime Minister Martin Ziguele. Patasse also took the opportunity to express his disappointment with what he perceived to be a lack of interest by the international community to come to the financial aid of CAR following May’s coup attempt.

    Bangui is a strategic point on the north bank of the Ubangui River, opposite the Equateur province of northern DRC, from which MONUC could monitor the planned withdrawal of forces as agreed under the 1999 Lusaka peace accord.
