EU grants US $859,485 in aid

    NAIROBI

    The European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), the foreign aid branch of the European Union (EU), has allocated one million euros (US $859,485) for emergency aid to the Central African Republic. The attempted coup in May, and the resulting violence in the capital, Bangui, led to some 300 deaths. An estimated 80,000 people were displaced as a direct result of the violence, their homes having been destroyed or pillaged. The funds are being used for the distribution of food, medical supplies and essential items to the most needy and to rehabilitate health centres damaged during the disturbances.
