RUF to continue disarming

    ABIDJAN

    The Revolutionary United Front (RUF) Military High Command announced on Sunday that it would continue disarming its fighters despite an earlier report that it had suspended the process, a ranking RUF official said.

    The chairman of the RUF Political and Peace Council, Omrie Golley, told a local radio broadcaster that on Saturday “it was agreed that the suspension of disarmament announced by RUF spokesman Gibril Massaquoi had been lifted”. Last week, Massaquoi announced the suspension of the disarmament in protest against attacks by pro-government militia and what he said was the government’s failure to release detained RUF fighters. He also said the action was taken in an effort to have Golley’s name removed from a UN travel ban imposed on Liberian officials and their associates in order to punish Liberia for its continued links with the RUF.

    Officials from UNAMSIL, the government and the RUF were due to meet on Tuesday to discuss issues that threaten the disarmament process.
