FDD frees soldier

    NAIROBI

    The armed rebel faction, Forces pour la defense de la democratie (FDD), on Friday released a Burundian army soldier who was then placed under the care of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Bujumbura. According to an ICRC press statement, the soldier - who was captured two months ago - was handed over to the army following a medical examination and a private interview. “This is the first time the ICRC has been able to perform this service in Burundi,” said Cedric Piralla, the ICRC head of delegation in Burundi. “What is most significant is that the parties to the conflict agreed to set aside scope for action to help an individual protected under international humanitarian law, and then ensured that action was able to be carried out.”
