Sleeping sickness causes massive loss

    NAIROBI

    Ethiopia loses about US $200 million a year to due trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), which affects animals in large parts of the country, the pro-government Walta Information Centre reported on Tuesday. The head of the national agency responsible for controlling rinderpest and trypanososmiasis, Dr Debebe Aregago, told a workshop for veterinarians that trypanosomiasis was endemic in roughly 20 percent of Ethiopian territory, and affected about 10 million head of the country’s population of 31 million cattle, Walta said. The 17-day workshop, which was attended by 35 veterinarians from Oromiya, Gambela, Benishangul-Gumuz and Amhara regional states, was discussing ways of controlling the disease.
