Rebels attack central Burundi

    NAIROBI

    Rebels attacked the Gakenke area of Muramvya commune in central Burundi on Tuesday night, Burundi radio said on Wednesday. During the attack, which it blamed on rebels of the Forces nationales de liberation (FNL), rebels reportedly made away with six cows before disappearing to Isale commune in Bujumbura-Rural. However, the FNL denied responsibility for the attack. “It is not true,” FNL spokesman Anicet Ntawuhangananayo told IRIN on Thursday. “We are not in that area they are talking about. It could be another group but not us.” In an earlier interview with IRIN, Ntawuhangananayo listed some areas of FNL operations as Bujumbura Rural, Bubanza, Cibitoke (northwest) and Gitega (central).
