Weapons of former rebels destroyed

    Ceremonies to destroy weapons handed over by Afar-led Front for the Restoration of Democracy (FRUD) took place in Djibouti on 7 May. The ceremonies come almost three weeks after the signing of a peace accord between the Djibouti government and the grouping formerly known as the “radical wing of the FRUD” led by Ahmad Dini Ahmad.

    The destruction ceremonies took place in northern Djibouti, with 1,204 ex-FRUD fighters taking part. In a highly symbolic gesture, FRUD Chairman Ahmad Dini Ahmad and Djibouti Interior Minister Abdallah Abdillahi Miguil wedged two weapons into the heap of arms to be set alight upon what was described as “the bonfire for peace”.
