WHO update

In its latest update on the situation in Angola, WHO reported that in coordination with the ministry of health, it has re-established its support to local health authorities with the opening of seven epidemiological satellite clinics. Key aims of these posts are to coordinate polio eradication activities and boost routine immunisation to 75 percent coverage for all vaccine-preventable diseases by the end of 2001 - an ambitious target in a country where rates have plummeted to 30-45 per cent in recent years. Five facilities, in the provincial capitals of Uige, Benguela, Lubango and Moxico, plus Luanda - have been launched so far, and two more, in Huambo and Cabinda, are due to open by the end of May. All bar Lubango are staffed by an international public health doctor.
