Disarmed fighters now 2,613

    ABIDJAN

    A total 2,613 irregular fighters have reported to disarmament camps in the northern locations of Kambia and Port Loko since the process began on 18 June, UNAMSIL reported on Friday.

    Up to Thursday the Revolutionary United Front had 1,037 fighters, 162 of them children, at the centres. The pro-government Civil Defence Forces militia had 1,576 disarmed fighters, among them 61 children.

    In addition, they have handed in weapons ranging from AK-47 assault rifles to an anti-aircraft battery. Similar operations will be conducted at the district level in other parts of the country two days after the 28 May deadline for disarmament expires in the Kambia sector.
