Counterfeit dollars paid to peacekeepers

    NAIROBI

    South Africa’s defence minister, Mosiuoa Lekota, said his ministry was probing an incident in which 160,000 rands in counterfeit US dollars was paid back to the South African National Defence Force’s (SANDF) financial section by a soldier returning from duty in the DRC, the South African news agency, SAPA, reported on Wednesday. The amount is the equivalent of US $20,138.50. The minister, who was answering a question in parliament, said the false notes had subsequently been issued by SANDF members going to the DRC for duty, and the fraud was picked up when they tried to use them in that country.
    Lekota said the probe into the matter was at “a very sensitive stage”. He said the case was about to be closed, as the investigators knew who was responsible.
