Rival factions in former Mobutu’s party seek reunification

    NAIROBI

    Officials of two rival factions of the opposition Popular Revolutionary Movement (MPR) [former DRC President Mobutu Sese Seko’s party] at the weekend held “reunification talks”, AFP reported. At the meeting, Mobutu’s last cabinet secretary, Felix Vunduawe te Pemako who recently returned to Kinshasa from exile was designated as “facilitator of the reunification”, AFP quoted a statement from the party as saying. Vunduawe was also named “provisional president” of the MPR and was charged with convening a party congress and selecting a new party steering committee, the statement said. After Mobutu’s death in 1997, his party split into two rival groups, MPR-Fait led by Catherine Nzuzi wa Mbombo and MPR-Legal headed by Mananga di Ntoka Pholo.
