By the time its national “campaign against torture” ends in October, the Ivorian chapter of Amnesty International hopes to have raised awareness in recognising what constitutes torture and other abusive practices, Amnesty’s programme coordinator, Victorine Djitrinou, told IRIN on Thursday.
The campaign, through seminars and information panels, aims to empower all segments of the population to recognize and condemn any occurrences of torture. It will in particular target the Ivorian media which, she said, had failed to promote human rights. This year’s campaign coincides with recent reports of rights violations allegedly supported by the last two administrations.
Amnesty opened its Abidjan office in 1980.
