Appeal for dialogue

An 11-member delegation from Parliamentarians Global Action (PGA) capped a 23-28 February mission to Cote d'Ivoire with an appeal for dialogue and reconciliation to restore peace and stability in the country.

In a statement published by local media, the delegation called on all social and political actors to support a national reconciliation forum to be held in April. It urged political parties to participate in municipal elections on 25 March and called on the international community to send election observers.

The mission, which met President Laurent Gbagbo and other political and civil society actors, listed respect for human rights and an "independent and speedy legal system" among the keys to achieving peace in Cote d'Ivoire, which has been plagued by instability and violence for over a year.
