Charges against generals reduced

Ivorian authorities have reduced from three to one the charges they instituted against two formers members of the erstwhile military junta in connection with an attack on the home of ex-junta leader General Robert Guei in September 2000.

'Le Patriote' newspaper reported on Friday that generals Lansana Palenfo and Abdoulaye Coulibaly will be tried for threatening national security while the two other charges, attempted assassination and accessory to murder, have been dropped.

Palenfo and Coulibably, who have been in detention since November, are expected to be brought to trial on 21 February. They still face a separate charge of embezzlement which the state filed against them on 7 February.
