Security forces prepare for spring

    ISLAMABAD

    The Kazakh National Security Committee Chairman, Alnur Musayev, said on Saturday that with the potential for conflict in Central Asia, border guards needed to prepare themselves for a possible aggravation on the southern borders [with Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan], Kazakh ‘Khabar TV’ reported on Monday. Security chiefs had ordered the strengthening of border forces to counteract “bandit formations from neighbouring countries, drug trafficking and illegal immigration” in anticipation that the situation in Central Asia would deteriorate next spring, the report said. Kazakhstan had established special mobile units designed to react to an escalation or potential conflict on the borders, among numerous other security measures, it added.
