Malaria control policy outlined

    Health Minister Ibrahim Jalloh has launched a document providing guidelines for the control of malaria in Sierra Leone, the state-owned news agency, SLENA, reported on Thursday.

    The policy document was jointly prepared by the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the ministry's Malaria Control Programme team. The aim is to reduce mortality and morbidity due to malaria, especially among children under five years and pregnant women. Moreover, the document aims to strengthen capacity in the diagnosis, management and prompt referral of severe cases at health centres outside the capital.

    The main referral hospitals report that for every 10 admissions, five or six are malaria cases, Jalloh said. Out of every 10 children under five years who die, four or five succumb to malaria-related illnesses.
