Cholera outbreaks spreads

    JOHANNESBURG

    The cholera outbreak in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province is spreading rapidly, and a number of cases have now been reported in the previously uninfected area of Umzinto on the south coast, SABC radio said on Wednesday. According to the report the health authorities are only able to provide a month's supply of bleach which is used to purify water.

    Meanwhile, reports said on Wednesday that cabinet was expected to meet in Pretoria on Thursday to approve a financial aid package to help fight the cholera epidemic in KwaZulu-Natal. The epidemic, reports said, was placing strain on the financial resources of the provincial health department, who also had to deal with a growing HIV/AIDS pandemic. KwaZulu-Natal has the highest HIV/AIDS infection rate in the country.
