The newly appointed police commissioner of the northeastern state of Yobe, Azubuike Udah, has promised to give priority to battling cross-border banditry by gunmen from neighbouring countries, “The Guardian’ reported on Friday.
Udah also said other priority areas included the frequent and often bloody clashes between local farmers and nomadic herdsmen, and communal violence sometimes sparked by religious and clan rivalries.
In recent years, Yobe and other northeastern states have witnessed frequent incidents of banditry attributed by local people and police authorities to armed groups who cross into Nigeria from neighbouring Chad and Cameroon.
50,000 march against Israel in Kano
About 50,000 Nigerian Muslims marched through the northern city of Kano on Friday to protest against Israeli actions in the Middle East, the AFP reported.
It said demonstrators carried placards such as “Death to Israel” and “Israel: Enemy of Palestine”. The agency said the demonstration, the largest ever staged in Nigeria in connection with the Middle East crisis, was peaceful.
