The former ruling Parti democratique de Cote d’Ivoire (PDCI) has won two additional parliamentary seats in by-elections last Sunday in the eastern district of Agnibilekrou, 200 km northeast of Abidjan, AFP reported.
The PDCI now has 79 seats while President Laurent Gbagbo’s Front populaire ivoirien (FPI) has 96 seats. The elections, originally scheduled for 10 December, were postponed after one of the PDCI’s candidates died a few days before the December elections. By-elections are due on Sunday in 26 northern constituencies where supporters of opposition leader, Alassane Ouattara, prevented the elections from holding after the Supreme Court barred him from running in a dispute concerning his nationality.
The PDCI has refused to occupy its parliamentary seats until by-elections are held.
